The Cardinal Figure Skating School

has been an official member of US Figure Skating's Basic Skills program since 1997.  We offer 16 weeks of top-notch skating instruction in Wesleyan University's Freeman Athletic Center, Middletown,CT.  Classes run from October to March, commencing with an annual ice show.

Basic Skills Membership

Upon registration, each skater will become a new or a returning member of the USFS Basic Skills program.  Each new member will receive a membership card and number, a Basic Skills Record Book, and a new member patch.  At the end of 16 weeks, skaters will receive a certificate of achievement and badges for the levels they have passed.

Purchasing Figure Skates & Skate Sharpening

We highly recommend that you purchase only good quality skates from a reputable figure skate dealer.  For years we have worked closely with Chris Bartlett, owner of Skater's Landing in North Haven, CT to provide us with skating equipment and services for our skaters.  You are encouraged to phone Skater's Landing for an appointment to be fitted for skates.  All returning skaters should plan to have their equipment evaluated and skates sharpened before lessons begin.

Proper Skating Attire

All skaters, be they beginner or advanced, should come to the rink dressed to skate.  We prefer clothing that allows freedom of movement.  Remember, especially for the little ones...it's cold in the rink!  Dress in layers.  Sweats for boys and leggins for girls are okay.  Don't forget mittens!  Skating dress or skirt and tights is the clothing of choice for girls.  Please no hockey skates.  Helmets are encouraged for first timers and tots.

Parental Supervision

Plan to have a responsible adult present at all times during the skating lessons and practice time that your child attends.  While we do our utmost to ensure a safe environment on the ice, accidents can happen.  In the event of an injury, we look to the parent or adult in charge to be present to handle all situations.

Practice Time Rules

Practice time following lessons is provided solely for the skaters in our program.  Friends, family or anyone that is not a registered member of the CFSS is not allowed on the ice during this time.  This policy provides a fair and controlled practice time.
